Expert guidance on the diagnosis of prostate cancer and understanding PSA results.
What is PSA?
PSA is a blood test used to identify men with possible underlying prostate cancer. Abnormal PSA levels could be suggestive of prostate cancer and may warrant further urgent investigation. However, there are various conditions that could also be the cause of raised PSA. These could be:
- Benign prostatic enlargement
- Infection
- Recent procedures (for example cystoscopy or catheter placement)
- Recent sexual activity
- Cycling
